Healing Hue

Discover the soft new color that’s red hot for 2023

As a need for optimism sweeps the world after the global pandemic, trend forecasting agency and color authority WGSN has announced the Color of the Year for 2023. And the winner is . . . drumroll, please . . . Digital Lavender. This in-demand color is a soft purple hue that evokes tranquility and healing.

It is already being spotted in all different consumer categories, ranging from fashion to household goods to technological gadgets. Are you dreaming of a light purple smartphone or computer? Apple and Samsung have introduced purple to many of their latest product lines.

“Digital Lavender signifies that stability, serenity and digital escapism that so many of us have built into our recuperative rituals to both protect and improve our mental health in challenging times,” noted WGSN in its announcement.

According to WGSN research, colors with a short wavelength, such as this purple hue, induce calmness and serenity. “Already embedded in digital culture, we expect this imaginative color to converge across virtual and physical worlds,” the researchers say.

Digital lavender is a gender-inclusive color that is already popular in youth fashion and is forecasted to broaden into all product categories in 2023, in fashion, beauty, home decor and wellness.
Here are some interesting ways to incorporate this soothing, trendy hue into your everyday:

Home decor

Purple has long been a popular choice for home furnishings, as it signifies wealth. Its softer version is typically uitilized anywhere you want to set the stage for peacefulness and serenity. Turn your living room into a sanctuary with lavender pillows, mood-boosting light bulbs or an accent wall. Add tranquility and color to a bedroom by mixing it with neutral staples like chocolate brown, taupe and white. Transform your bathroom into a day spa using lilac accents, like tiles or soft furnishings, including bath mats or towels.

Apparel

While Digital Lavender is featured in all types of apparel, from dresses to tracksuits, you can also experiment with it as an accent color through jewelry or accessories. And the color isn’t reserved for women. Burberry has a host of offerings for men, including lavender polos and button-down shirts.

Make-up

Some popular cosmetic brands are adding this light purple tone to their palettes, including Huda Beauty, which offers an eyeshadow palette featuring glitter-speckled lavender shades. Charlotte Tillbury, a favorite cosmetic brand among supermodels, is now heavily showcasing lavender in many of its products.

Technology

As consumers move away from clinical white and silver shades for more “digitally cozy” tones, you’ll find plenty of options, from watches to earbuds to smartphones.

Not a fan of lavender?

Don’t worry. WGSN has predicted four other key colors will dominate the spring and summer season in 2023: Luscious Red, Sundial, Tranquil Blue and Verdigris (an oxidized blue-green color – think the Statue of Liberty).
